Bis tapped the send icon with her revised report to GAJA headquarters, including the suspicion her ship might’ve been infiltrated. Just in case things went—kaboom!—everyone would have a record of her whereabouts and the possible circumstances of her demise. She hadn’t found anything suspicious, and the ship’s scan, internal and external, also came up with zeroes. Although, it did alert her to the low supply of powdered milk, but she wasn’t fussed. Jun’s excessive use of it in his coffee wasn’t a priority, but his fate stayed in the back of her mind. She hoped he was just hunkered down somewhere, keeping safe. Out of habit, she checked her messages again. Nothing.

With only a day and a half left before she reached Triton, the increase in space traffic was noticeable. She’d passed several vessels traversing the stretch of space, including a few herculean cargo ships, impulse-chugging along their merry way like an entire planet going for a stroll.

Propping a foot on the dashboard with a tolerable coffee in hand, Bis stared out into space. She’d been on edge ever since sniffing that odd fragrance. Sleep had been intermittent, restless, with one ear trained for any noises. Nothing. She was alone on the vessel, but it hadn’t put her at ease. Someone had entered the ship. They’d poked about and been in her business. That irked as well as disturbed. And, worse, they probably knew she travelled with someone else. If they ever discovered who, she’d be in deep shit. She hoped they hadn’t clued in yet.

Thoughts of home and comfort foods flitted through her mind when, before she could take another sip, the comms squawked with incoming calls. Even her relay lit up with notifications, making her hand jerk, sloshing the coffee.

Shit!

She was clearly within range of the Triton’s outer network beacons. Checking the comms first, she spotted the Galactic Judicial Authority signature on screen. It meant they’d received all her reports, including the new contact sign for the ship. Taking a deep breath, she straightened and engaged the call.

“HQ, this is Agent Bis Rose.” She checked to see if the call was live or recorded. Priority live feed, with delay. She rattled off her agent credentials as confirmation.

“Rose. Finally.” The other end said after fifteen seconds. “Always a hard job pinning you down.”

“Director Guerrero.” Crap. The director himself? She sat straighter, even though there was no video.

“Agent.” His tone changed. “What the hell crap have you dropped in our front lawn? It’s like diarrhoea, and messy.”

“Uh…Sir, I, uh…” At a loss for words, she scrunched her face in thought. What was the director on about? If he’d seen her reports, there was nothing crappy about it. Frustrating, but far from shitty—

“How far along are you? Half a day, a day?”

“A little over that, sir. What’s going on?”

“Hiro’s dead—apparent suicide—I’m sure you’ve heard.”

“Yes, sir. It’s the reason I’m—”

“Enforcers are dispatched to verify and find the body—they’re heading towards the Mercury habitat clusters. We received your heads-up earlier today regarding Helena Iwamoto.
